OptiFuel® Coker Process Technology
OptiFuel® Technology is a new, revolutionary coker process technology that significantly improves the profitability of refinery cokers.
OptiFuel® Technology utilizes a proprietary additive injection process to increase the amount of high-value transportation fuels produced by refinery cokers, while decreasing the amount of less-valuable products, such as petroleum coke and fuel gas.
OptiFuel® Technology has been proven in pilot tests. These tests demonstrate that, without changing operating conditions or feed, a coker utilizing the OptiFuel® Technology can achieve a substantial decrease in coke production with a proportionate increase in valuable liquid production.

OPTIFUEL® TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
In the oil refining industry, technologies are often tested in pilot plants before commercial implementation in the refinery. Pilot plant tests at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) have been conducted to demonstrate, improve, and optimize the OptiFuel® Technology. The following test results were achieved, while operating conditions & coke quality were unchanged:
- Coke Yield Decreases: 6-12+%
- Higher Naphtha (gasoline): Up to 50%
- Increases Gas Oil Yields: Up to 50%
- Valuable Gases Increase: Up to 100%
- Fuel Gas Decrease: Up to 15%
PROCESS OPTIONS
Refinery engineering and economics were then used to develop process methods that consistently produce desired coker product yields in various refineries. This has been achieved by optimizing the coker reactions and providing process options to optimize coker yields, de-bottleneck coker sections, and improve other coker operations. Various process options provide design and operational flexibility to optimize OptiFuel® for each delayed coker unit and refinery. Thus, specific coker design, feedstocks, product outputs, and current operational goals are taken into account.
COMPUTER MODELS
In the oil industry, linear programming (LP) computer models are often used to determine the economic viability of new technologies. As shown below, coker upgrade benefits more than doubled for OptiFuel® test results from PSU pilot plant tests, when using an LP model.
Another computer model also produces various investment analyses for the refinery. The modest capital requirements typically achieve a simple payback of less than 3 months and investment returns of over 30% per year.
